When you travel train

  • Carry reusable cups, dishes and flatware.

  • Make sure your plastic trash doesn't end up in the ocean and the forest.

  • Don't pick flowers or collect wild creatures for pets. Leave animals and plants where you find them.

  • Don't buy souvenirs made from wild animals.

  • Watch out for wildlife. Give consideration to all living things you see crossing the road.

  • Go on a socially responsible vacation tour and experience another culture firsthand while helping with ecological or archeological projects.

  • Do business with travel agents and operators who follow guidelines set out by groups like the Ecotourism Society or the National Audubon Society.

  • When traveling, be sensitive to and respect native cultures.

  • Support local environmental and community groups where you travel.

  • Choose locally owned accommodations and restaurants. Opt for green hotels if you can. Let lodging management know that you don't need clean sheets and towels every days.

  • Use public transportation.

  • Plan a vacation in your town doing all the things you never find time for otherwise, rather than burning fuel on long distance travel. Get to know your town and visit areas you have never seen, especially ethnic communities.

  • Build smaller camp fires.

  • Stay on the trail.

  • "Take only photographs. Leave only footprints."
