- Convert by example. Your good examples will encourage your family, friends, co-workers and neighbors to save resources too.
- Make environmental education a priority.
- Complain to merchants about excess packaging, use of plastics, etc.. Write letters to the companies who make over-packaged products.
- Teach children to respect nature and the environment. Take them on a hike. Help them plant a tree or build a bird house. Buy them a nature book or a subscription to a wildlife magazine.
- Join a conservation organization.
- Volunteer your time to conservation projects.
- Actively boycott companies with a history of environmental irresponsibility (write letters to explain your position).
- Eat less meat. Every quarter pound of hamburger we eat destroys 55 square feet of rain forest.
- Register to vote. You might also consider registering as a member of your local Green Party. Each additional registration of a Green voter increases the pressure for elected politicians (of any party) to address environmental issues.
- Give money to worthy conservation/environmental causes.
- Make sure your local zoo respects and protects the health and well-being of the animals living there.
- Watch nature programs on TV.
- Subscribe to conservation or environmental publications. Purchase them as gifts for others.
- Write to the government (MP,MLA, Premier) to encourage municipal, provincial and national changes. Letter writing and other forms of active protest are one of the better venues open to concerned individuals and organizations. This is due to the fact that the receiving individuals or companies do not interpret each letter as merely from one person, instead they consider it to be an general indicator of the attitudes of the whole population. In this way your letter can often be thought to represent thousands of people( even more so for a company or influential school). In this way, a single person is able to make a significant change in policy. Consider each letter a step in the right direction: towards a better future.
