What you can do with your car |
|
- Whenever possible use alternatives to the private automobile: use public transit, ride your bike, or walk instead.
- Use carpools when public transportation is not available (work commuting, children's schools, shopping, entertainment events, etc.). Call your city's carpooling service for information.
- Drive sensibly. Slower speeds and gentle acceleration are not only safer, they avoid wasting gasoline.
- Instead of letting your car idle when stopping for quick errands, turn the engine off.
- Keep your car tuned up and your tires inflated properly to save gasoline.
- Make sure your car air conditioner does not leak freon. Ask your mechanic to check if you're not sure.
- Keep your car as green as possible. Choose long-life tires, batteries and other parts. Buy from dealers who recycle tires, oil, etc. A well-tuned car uses less gas and produces fewer emissions.
- Buy retread tires. Americans dispose of nearly 300 million tires a year; retreads keep tires out of landfills.
- When you buy your next car, choose a more fuel-efficient model.
- If your car has an air conditioner, make sure its coolant is recycled whenever you have it serviced.
- Recycle your engine oil.
- Keep your wheels in alignment to save your tires.
- Don't litter.
